Degas is one of the most important and popular figures of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art. Degas was not as outgoing or social as some of his contemporaries. In fact, to many of his fellow artists, Degas was seen as an aloof, self-centered and even snobbish man.

Some considered him arrogant. However, few questioned his artistic skill or discipline. His dedication to visual accuracy and his loyalty to art for the sake of art allowed him to create works that rank not only among the most appreciated of his time, but of all time.
