GS Typing Tutor
![]()
Have you ever had to type a lot of text on a computer? Did you think at those moments that you could have done the task much faster with touch typing? I experienced some such situations, and when I found GS Typing Tutor, I decided that it is finally the time to learn touch typing to have no problems with it in future. So here is GS Typing Tutor. The first good thing I noticed is the size of the installation file of the program. It is less than 2 Mbytes, that allows downloading the program from the developer’s website in few minutes even using dial-up connection. Installation process completes without problems, and it does not require any computer skills – just click consequently Next in all windows. Ok, so far, so good. Now I run the program. Login window appears:
Multiple users support – this is a real great feature when your computer is used by other people beside you, like me and my sister. Every user can customize the program (interface and training settings). The program also keeps the results of the lessons you accomplish. To begin study, you need to choose a course and a lesson:
Beside basic course for learning the alpha keys there is a course to learn touch typing of the symbols and numbers (those that are above the alpha keys). There is also a special course for numeric keypad. I think, I will try it some day and will no more look at accountants with envy. No doubt, additional training with this program would make the work of accountants and cashiers even more effective. Let’s try the alpha keys course. As a whole, the learning process is not boring, and in contrast to many other such programs, there is no strong desire to exit the program and give up forever your dream to learn touch typing. Instead, every lesson makes you more and more confident and you want to study further! The program interface also helps you in your study. There are hands shown in the bottom of the program window, with a finger you need to use at a particular moment for pressing keys being highlighted. This really helps to avoid looking at keyboard.
Having accomplished some lessons, you may test your new achieved skills in Test section of the program. If you prefer studying by playing games, then choose one of five games available in the Game section. I like “Card” game, but somebody might prefer “Attacks of the alien” or “Baloons”.
As I mentioned above, to assess the effectiveness of your training there is a statistics section. Here you can find the whole duration of your trainings, results in charts, history of trainings, comparative table of results of all the users using the program on your computer. Some other features of the program also should be mentioned. Flexible configuration allows you to set the appearance of the program, duration of tests, keyboard layout. The latter means that you may choose one of 28 keyboard layouts. They include almost all keyboard layouts used in Europe and North America. If you have not decided yet whether to use GS Typing Tutor or not for your learning touch typing, just download and try it! Shareware version of the program runs 21 times. And if you like it as I do – register it for as little as $29.95. I think it is worth the price. To conclude, GS Typing Tutor produces rather pleasing impression. This program could be useful both for beginners to learn touch typing from the very basics and for other users to improve their skills in typing. I think you won’t regret if you play GS Typing Tutor every day during your breaks at work instead of those useless Tetris or card games.
