Editor's Review
Pontifex awarded Softpile Most Popular

There are some games, which purpose is not only to entertain, but also help users to develop their skills and know better about their abilities. Undoubtedly that, the program Pontifex belongs to such kind of games. In this program you construct, build and test bridges to see how your creations hold up under pressure.

You may build a bridge, which will seem to be very firm with a solid construction, but it won't always mean that it'll be really so good and support the test. First of all, your bridge has to remain standing and doesn't plum into the river under the weight of its construction and, secondly, the train must safely pass over your bridge. If all these trials are overcome successfully, it'll mean that your calculations have turned out to be correct and you have done well work and created a stable bridge.

The robust physics deployed in Pontifex lets you build a wide variety of bridges that can span the river. The 3D graphics allows you to view the bridge from any angle including a first person train view - its like being strapped to the front of the train when your bridge is first tested (if this happened in real life I think we might have engineers checking all their bridges in a simulator).

Pontifex includes 32 types of bridge building levels in varying degrees of difficulty from simple to complex. A level editor is also included, so, you can create your own levels and trade them with others.

Pontifex is a very spectacular game. In spite of the main aim of it—designing and building a solid bridge— watching your bridge creation breaks and plunges a train into the watery depths below can be half the fun.

While designing the bridge, you can choose different construction equipments, some variants are suggested to you. But be careful, you should avoid using too heavy material on the top of your construction, otherwise your bridge risks even not to wait a passing train and tumble down under the heaviness of its weight.

On the other hand, if you use too light materials, a test vehicle won't be able to pass safely over your bridge and will collapse your construction.

Personally for me, the most interesting thing in this game was the possibility to check my calculations and estimations. If my bridge collapsed, I was disappointed and tried to find and correct the error committed in the design, but if my construction stood well the test, I was very proud of myself and my engineering abilities.

So, at the end I'd like just to wish you successfully test your bridge and yourself with Potifex.

you building bridges. in each level. the higher the level the higher the dificulty. limited by the budget which most of the time too low to build the bridge you have think of in the beginning. pontifex is a 3D developed version of bridge builder and contains nearly all that was missed in bridge builder. calbles for suspension bridges, two different kinds of steel-one cheap, light and one more expensive, heavier but stronger. I was quite addicted after the first 10 minutes. its a must for every achitect(-student -like myself)or civil engineer. or everybody who likes to construct bridges over 300m and more. moreover you can play it in short intermissions off work or studying or whatever.
