CloneDVD awarded Softpile Most Popular

Sometimes you may need to make a copy of your valuable DVD movies. But this task might become difficult if there is a protection from copying such as Content Scrambling System or region protection implemented on a DVD. Besides, even if you have managed to copy the DVD to hard disk, you need to write it to another DVD, that requires additional program for burning DVDs to be used. You may easily solve all these problems with CloneDVD that not only can copy even a protected DVD, but also provides means to reorganize content of a DVD data.

So, as it follows from its name, CloneDVD is a program developed for creating backups of DVDs. Thus, it performs two tasks. First, CloneDVD copies data from a DVD to hard disk (as files or an iso-image) or directly to another DVD (if two DVD drives, with one being writing, are available). Writing to another DVD is the second task, and beside direct writing to a DVD you may write a DVD from an iso-image or files stored on hard disk. Moreover, intermediately in both tasks you can reorganize the content of the DVD by deleting unneeded Chapters, audio streams and subtitles and set a compression of the data, that, of course, is carried out at the expense of quality. This feature is quite convenient, for example, for writing to a DVD with less volume.

As to design of CloneDVD, it has consistent nice style. Easy-to-use interface of CloneDVD is implemented as a wizard, where parameters of a task to be performed are consequently set in three windows.

In the first CloneDVD window source and target are set. This window has the following three fields: Source, Target and Copy Mode.

Source field is designed to choose a source of data (DVD in DVD drive or files on hard disk). On the left of the corresponding elements size of the selected sources is displayed.

In Target field a place to store data should be chosen (another DVD drive, folder or iso-image on hard disk). Also the maximum size of the output DVD movie can be set.

In Copy Mode field you may choose, whether a whole disk, only main movie or custom parts of the DVD should be copied. According to the mode chosen, after clicking the Next button at the bottom of the first window, in the CloneDVD second window designed to edit a DVD structure the corresponding parts of the DVD will be selected.

Chapters, which were excluded from the DVD, will be replaced with zero-length chapters and thus will not disrupt the functionality of the title menu of the DVD. The capability to choose data that should be copied seems very convenient to me, because there is no point to backup, for example, audio streams and subtitles in foreign languages. This is a big advantage of the program, because it can not be done when copying of a DVD is performed using windows explorer.

After clicking the Next button, the third window appears where summary for the selected parameters is displayed. There is also a Burn/Copy button to start the process of copying or writing a DVD. Process progress is also displayed in this window.

Thus, as can be seen, to work with CloneDVD is quite easy. But if any questions regarding how to work with the program appear, there is a detailed Help where you may find descriptions of CloneDVD features, FAQ section, and information on how to purchase and register CloneDVD.

A negative feature of CloneDVD is that before writing in Hard disk to DVD mode, even if the Whole Disk without compression is chosen, CloneDVD still creates a temporary copy of a DVD on hard disk before writing it to an actual DVD. Thus, beside the DVD data stored on hard drive it makes one more copy on hard drive, that requires additional disk space (several Gigabytes) and time (copying of several Gigabytes takes additionally 5-10 minutes).

Concluding, CloneDVD produces an impression of a high-quality professional program. With that the price of the program is rather high, but if you often copy your DVDs, then CloneDVD may significantly simplify your work after all. Before purchasing I recommend to check up the list of programs that can be bought with discounts on a Softpile website. And if you want to try CloneDVD before buying it, download a trial version that works for 14 days.
