Nowadays, when significant amount of valuable information is stored and processed only electronically, aspects of software protection against virus attacks and other harmful programs are of great importance. There are many anti-virus programs to protect your computer, and today I will describe one such program – Safe'n'Sec.

As a whole, all anti-virus programs in their functionality do not have too many differences. Usually there are scanner to search for viruses in files on a computer and monitor to check files when they are being opened, downloaded or saved to a disk in real time mode. Searching for viruses on hard disks and in RAM is performed by comparing parts of programs' code with signatures of all known malicious programs from an anti-virus program database. The main bottleneck of this approach is that new viruses appear every day, and for effective protection one need to update this database in proper time.

Safe'n'Sec has also scanner and monitor. However, to avoid the disadvantage of conventional anti-virus programs (obsolete databases), significantly more attention is paid not to searching for known viruses but to monitoring activity of all the processes on a computer and blocking those which might potentially violate security and cause malfunction of a PC. In this regard it is able to effectively protect computer from all malicious processes caused by any kind of threat like a virus, a hacker attack, or a trojan application. But let's discuss it step by step.

After the installation the program asked me to reboot my computer. After reboot immediately a message appeared informing that a program is attempting to register in startup menu. At the same time starting of all other processes was also postponed. It is well known, that many viruses while infecting a system for further operation attempt to get registered in startup menu, therefore Safe'n'Sec decided to worn about it. In the Safe'n'Sec message window of this kind you may block a process which action is potentially dangerous for your system, or allow the process continuing its operation. As to blocking, you may block all actions of the process or only the current one, with blocking may be applied for current moment, current work session or forever.

The approach of Safe'n'Sec is quite interesting. It must be more effective for system protection, than the conventional one. After all, traditional anti-virus solutions detect malicious activities by changes in the file code as a result of infection, whereas Safe'n'Sec detects and blocks malicious actions and processes immediately when they just attempt to infect files.

After boot of operating system Safe'n'Sec continues monitoring and analyzing activity of all the processes being executed in the background mode, and an icon of the program is displayed in task bar. Double click on this icon opens the program window:

In the main window of the program the current monitoring mode is displayed. It may be changed from Trusting (weak) to Total (strict). The number of processes being executed at the moment is also displayed here. One may view details about every process (description, version, product, vendor, user ID, etc.) in separate window. In the same window every process may be stopped:

On the left of the main program window buttons of additional tools are placed: Scan for malware, Check for updates, and View reports. By clicking Scan for malware button the scanner is started. By default it scans the system hard disk for viruses. To scan other disks or separate folders and files, click right mouse button on an object you need to scan and choose Scan for malware from the menu. Process of scanning may be paused or stopped using Pause and Stop buttons on the scanner window. It is very convenient, because sometimes during scanning process one may require granting all the resources of a system to another task, and here you may just click Pause and continue scanning later.

I can't say much about the effectiveness of the scanner, because I had reinstalled my operating system (with prior formatting hard disks) just two days ago, therefore program did not find any viruses in my system, and I am sure there can not be any. The only inconvenient thing in the scanner is that there are no means to schedule regular check-ups (for example, daily at 20:00).

By clicking Check for updates button in the main window, the program connects to its server and looks for updates of its virus database, that is quite common for all anti-virus programs.

Summing up, Safe'n'Sec has all the conventional features of anti-virus programs, and additional capability to detect and block suspicious processes lets one to effectively protect a computer not only from viruses, worms, and trojans, but also from various spy programs (also known as spyware).
