Annotation is a software tool that allows users to categorize events based on their type, start time, and duration. It simplifies the coding process and helps track events accurately.
Annotation offers several useful features. In real-time mode, the software provides greater accuracy than human response time, working within 1/100th of a second. Additionally, users can load audio or video that plays in QuickTime directly into Annotation, allowing them to pause, scrub, and seek through their timeline together with the media using AV mode.
Event data can be exported to CSV, enabling users to load it into popular stats or spreadsheet software such as Excel, Stata, or SPSS. If users have loaded their media into Annotation, they can export their event data as media clips, either as references or standalone files.
When coding audio or video, Annotation displays the audio amplitude waveform together with event data. It also enables users to add notes to any event, which will be exported in the CSV file as an additional column.
Annotation features zooming options allowing users to zoom in to get a detailed view of their data or zoom out to get a broader view. Users can also adjust playback rate, direction, and stepping for frame-by-frame analysis of media. If users make a mistake, they can readjust the start and end times of their events, delete events they didn't mean to enter, or recode any events they missed.
For users who need a consistent coding setup, Annotation lets them create custom templates for their projects that can be used as the starting point for new documents. Seeking and scrubbing is easy with a horizontally enabled scroll ball such as the one on Apple's Mighty Mouse or a compatible jog shuttle, and Annotation also provides a standard scroll bar.
One limitation of Annotation is that its save feature is disabled.
