Apt-get Install / Remove Packet is a software tool designed to install and remove packages using the Debian apt-get package management system. It simplifies package management for Debian-based systems.
Originally designed to work with .deb packages on Debian systems, APT has since been updated to work with RPM packages via apt-rpm, and to function on other operating systems, such as Mac OS X, through fink. A front-end for dpkg, APT streamlines the process of installing and removing software on Unix systems.
With APT, retrieval and configuration of software, as well as compiling (sometimes), is made possible through automated processes from APT sources. APT does not exist as an apt program but rather as a C++ library of functions used by several command line programs, including apt-get and apt-cache. These tools can upgrade a system or specific packages, install or remove packages, and list dependencies, among other features.
When installing packages, APT tools can list dependencies and even recommend or suggest packages. They can automatically install dependencies and perform critical operations on a package system, allowing for the installation of packages. Similarly, APT tools can update packages by installing, removing, or updating other packages.
APT has earned a place among Debian's top features and is acknowledged for giving Debian the reputation of being "hard to install, but easy to maintain." However, with the introduction of Debian 3.1 and its Debian-Installer, Debian's installation might be too easy nowadays to maintain this slogan.
