CoaSim is a simulation software for modeling recombination and gene conversion in coalescent processes.
With CoaSim, you can easily generate and segregate samples into cases and controls, based on selected individual markers. This feature makes it an ideal tool for constructing data sets for research and association studies. Developed in collaboration between Bioinformatics ApS and Bioinformatics Research Center (BiRC), CoaSim is a robust and reliable software tool written in C++ and Guile Scheme.
CoaSim is available as source code under the GNU General Public License, GPL, and as binary versions in Linux RPM files. The source code has been successfully compiled on various UNIX and Linux systems, as well as macOS and Windows with Cygwin. However, it is currently not possible to create binary distributions for other platforms, given the author's limited access to other architectures.
One exciting feature of CoaSim's latest release is the addition of callbacks for population structure events, such as bottlenecks and migration. Also, a significant bug that caused the starting and ending times of epochs to be incorrect in some instances has been fixed.
In summary, CoaSim is an excellent software tool for simulating the coalescent process with recombination and gene conversion. Its efficient algorithm and ease of use make it ideal for generating and segregating cases and controls datasets for research and association studies.
