GConfmm is a software library that provides C language bindings for GConf, a configuration database system for the GNOME desktop environment. It enables developers to easily access and manipulate program settings stored in GConf.
Firstly, head to the directory containing the software's source code and type the command `./configure` in the terminal to configure the package for your system. In case you're using `csh` on an old version of System V, type `sh ./configure` instead, to prevent `csh` from attempting to execute `configure` itself. As `configure` runs, it'll display a couple of messages detailing which features it's checking for. This process may take a while.
Next up, type `make` to compile the package. If you wish to run any self-tests that come with the package, you can optionally type `make check`. After compiling, install the programs, along with any accompanying files and documentation, by typing `make install`.
If you want to get rid of program binaries and object files from the source code directory, type `make clean`. Alternatively, you can use `make distclean` to remove the files created by `configure` as well. Keep in mind that `make maintainer-clean` is primarily meant for the package's developers, and you may have to obtain multiple other programs to regenerate files that came with the distribution.
