One of the annoying aspects of other menubar monitors is that they use the NSStatusItem API, which can reorder the menubar on every login. MenuMeters avoids this issue by using true SystemUIServer plugins, which saves previous settings and commands. The user can drag and drop the MenuMeters monitors to any desired location on the menubar, and it will retain its position across logins and restarts.
The CPU Meter provides users with various ways of displaying system load, such as a total percentage, user and system time, and thermometers. The menu for the CPU Meter offers several useful features, such as uptime, load average, and quick access to Process Viewer and Console.
The Disk Activity Meter displays the activity of local disks that are connected to the system, including hotplugged FireWire and USB disks. The Disk Meter menu also shows volume space details for local drives.
For the Memory Meter, users have the option of displaying memory usage as a pie chart, thermometer, history graph, or used/free totals. The Memory Meter menu provides a breakdown of current memory usage and virtual memory statistics, and can also display a paging indicator light.
The Net Meter can display network throughput as arrows, bytes per second, and/or a graph, and users can select from various scaling factors and calculations based on link speed or peak traffic. Users can also see current interfaces and their status in the Net Meter menu.
With all these features available, it's no wonder that MenuMeters is a popular choice among MacOS X users. Although the current version, 1.4 Beta 1, is a beta release, it has undergone initial testing, and no major issues have been found. However, users should be aware that serious bugs may still be present.
