PhpLabware is a database system that operates on the web.
Search results are output in reports that are generated based on simple HTML templates, and the tool supports both file and image uploads. Additionally, it offers full-text searches for uploaded material. Phplabware employs a UNIX-like user and group access control mechanism that allows for fine-grained read and write control for entire databases and individual records.
The platform's plugin mechanism is among its most significant features, as it enables easy and fast adaptation of phplabware to meet specific needs. Phplabware was developed in molecular biology labs and ships with predefined databases designed to meet the needs of life sciences labs. Modules for antibodies, protocols, pdfs, pdbs, and files are currently available.
One of the system's design goals was to reduce the amount of data users have to enter. For example, the pdf reprint module, known as the virtual library, requires only the pdf file and the unique identifier from Pubmed. Besides the provides modules, phplabware's functionality can be extended and tailored to specific requirements.
System administrators can use the web-interface to create new tables entirely integrated into phplabware. It consists of a series of PHP scripts that use adodb as a database wrapper and is developed using Postgres and MySQL as an SQL server that's compatible with other servers. It is effortless to install, and the PHP scripts handle version upgrades completely. It has been tested on Suse Linux, RedHat, Mandrake, Mac OS X, and is expected to work on Windows too.
In the most recent release, version 0.6, several bugs present in the previous release were fixed, such as editing tables in Safari, the view icon not showing when MySQL was the RDBMS, the delete button not working, and the previous/next icon malfunctioning.
