TinyFlux is an operating system based on PCLOS, that uses Fluxbox as its only window manager. It is designed to have a lightweight and fast desktop experience.
Fluxbox is a popular choice for a variety of 'lite' Linux distributions, and has become a preferable option to other window managers like icewm and XFCE. Two examples of these distributions are DSL and Feather Linux. Despite its popularity among these distributions, Fluxbox's capabilities are often misunderstood. Initially, users looking to run PCLOS on older hardware might not be familiar with Fluxbox's unique user interface.
When creating TinyFlux, the developer started off with a fresh install of PCLOS and began removing KDE and other components to lighten the system. Their goal was to reduce the live-cd size with a target of under 500MB. After discovering the TinyMe project, they decided to use it as their base for TinyFlux. The result was an ISO of approximately 225MB.
One of the standout features of TinyFlux is its use of Fluxbox as the window manager. It also features an i586 'Legacy' Kernel 2.6.18.8, Gnome Display Manager (GDM) for login, Thunar File Manager and Searchmonkey for desktop searches. The software comes equipped with XFBurn for CD burning, Opera web browser, Flash 9, Sylpheed mail client, XMMS for audio playback, Medit and Ted for basic text processing, GQView for picture viewing, Synaptic, PCLinuxOS Control Centre and Draklive Installer, Xterm, and various X-Utilities.
In this latest release of TinyFlux, several changes have been made, including the removal of Grafburn and the replacement with Brasero. XPDF was also removed and replaced with Evince document viewer. The update includes the addition of WMix - dockable audio mixer that sits in the slit, and the Gnome ALSA mixer GUI. The software features an upgraded bootsplash and gfxboot theme, along with added menu entries for Thunar bulk rename, Thunar preferred applications, and GPS Super User Mode. The software features a new Root fluxbox theme tied into the TinyFlux theme and PCFluxboxOS GDM theme.
Overall, this software is an excellent option for users looking for a stripped-down operating system capable of running on older hardware. With the addition of several new features and tweaks, TinyFlux is a solid choice for those who prefer minimalism when it comes to their software.
