Virtuozzo Containers provides comprehensive server automation and virtualization capabilities in a single package.
To use Virtuozzo Containers, the server must be supported by the host Linux OS, which includes 86, x86-64, or IA-64 servers. Most servers supported by the mainstream Linux kernel or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.0 kernel are compatible. Note that proprietary pre-compiled binary drivers such as low-end RAID controllers are generally NOT supported. In addition, the server must have at least 1 GB of RAM and hard drive(s) with at least 15 GB of free disk space. The network card must also be compatible with the host Linux OS.
Supported Linux distributions include Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and 5, CentOS 4 and 5, Fedora 7, and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10.
Installation of Virtuozzo Containers 4.0 involves two main steps. First, you need to install and configure the Host Linux operating system on your server. This includes partitioning your hard disk by creating the / (10-12 Gb), /swap (2 times RAM installed on your server), and /vz (all the remaining space on the disk) partitions. You also need to disable the firewall and define the minimum system software set to be installed on your system. Once completed, reboot your system and log in as root.
Secondly, you need to install the Virtuozzo Containers 4.0 software on your server by running the Virtuozzo Containers installation program. If you have the software on a CD or DVD, you can do it by executing the following commands: # mount /media/cdrom # /media/cdrom/install. Alternatively, if you downloaded the software to some directory on your server, you can proceed by running # /Vz_Soft_Dir/install. Lastly, if you downloaded the software to your server via the vzinstall-linux.bin utility, execute one of the following commands depending on your server type:
To install the 32-bit version of Virtuozzo Containers: # ./virtuozzo-4.0.0-.swsoft-i386.sfx
To install the 64-bit version of Virtuozzo Containers on x64-86 processors: # ./virtuozzo-4.0.0-.swsoft-x86_64.sfx
To install the 64-bit version of Virtuozzo Containers on IA-64 processors: # ./virtuozzo-4.0.0-.swsoft-ia64.sfx
Once installed, enter the Virtuozzo license number and click Next. Select all available templates and click Install. Follow any remaining prompts, and once completed, click the Reboot button to complete the installation process. Overall, Virtuozzo Containers 4.0 is a powerful and efficient virtualization software, which is easy to install and use.
