American Gladiators video game, released in 1991, is available on Amiga, Sega Mega Drive / Genesis, Super NES, and Nintendo Entertainment System. The game is based on the well-known American Gladiators TV game show.
The NES version of the game is unique as it differs greatly from the other versions as well as the actual game show. The events were transformed into side-scrolling and overhead mini-levels that only partially resembled the real-life events.
In each joust event, four different gladiator battles take place atop platforms. The objective is to win each gladiator battle while jumping across a series of joust platforms in between battles.
Human Cannonball is another event where players have to beat four gladiators with perfectly-timed leaps off the rope. The gladiator's platform elevates up and down, making the task even more challenging. The gladiators scream gratuitously (and often humorously) as they are knocked off the platforms.
The Wall event is another challenging level featuring numerous screenfuls of handholds and footholds with various obstacles, walls, floors, and occasional treacherous stretches. Some areas include empty spaces with very few handholds, which players need to navigate in order to advance. The gladiators are also plentiful and attack at different points during the wall level.
Overall, American Gladiators is a fun game that provides a unique experience compared to the other versions and the actual game show. The various events and challenges offer players hours of entertainment and excitement.
