Bioknoppix is an exceptional customized distribution of Knoppix Linux Live CD that essentially offers a fully functional Linux OS distribution with an array of open-source applications that have been designed specifically for the molecular biologist. When using Bioknoppix, all you have to do is boot from the CD and you're ready to go. The best part? Bioknoppix doesn't interfere with the host computer besides using some RAM, which makes it ideal for demonstrations, molecular biology students, workshops, and various other activities.

To run Bioknoppix, there are several requirements that must be met. First, you'll need an Intel-compatible CPU (i486 or later). Additionally, 20 MB of RAM for text mode is required, but at least 96 MB is needed for graphics mode with KDE. To make use of the various office products, it's recommended to have at least 128 MB of RAM. You'll also require a bootable CD-ROM drive or a boot floppy and standard CD-ROM (IDE/ATAPI or SCSI). Additionally, a standard SVGA-compatible graphics card and a serial or PS/2 standard mouse or IMPS/2-compatible USB-mouse are necessary.
