Bist

Bist is a chemical drawing tool that stands for bidimensional structures, with the added bonus of sounding like "beast" in English. It is primarily focused on organic chemistry, but can also be useful for chemists or teachers. Bist offers support for many formalisms used to describe molecule structures, such as single bonds, double bonds, stereospecific bonds, charges, resonance arrows, and lone pairs.

This project can export both postscript and png (although the latter is currently of poor quality). The latest version is integrated with openbabel API, allowing for virtually all of the formats accepted by the library to be valid inputs for Bist.

While currently only supported on the GNU/Linux platform, Bist offers key features such as input in native and over 20 different formats (CML, XYZ, mol, etc.), export in SVG, PostScript, FIG, and PNG format via plotutils, and a simple template system. It also has support for i18n, a plug-in system, translation, scaling, flipping, 3D and 2D rotation, unlimited undos, and parsing of linear fragments (such as -CH2CH(C=OOH)2).

Bist is still currently in beta stage of development, so it is strongly suggested not to use it except for testing or hacking purposes. While the portability currently isn't a goal, any efforts in this direction are appreciated; feel free to ask for any porting questions.

In summary, Bist is a chemical drawing tool with a plethora of features, including the support for multiple formats, export options, undo capability, linear fragment parsing, and more. However, it is important to remember that it is currently only in beta and remains primarily supported only on GNU/Linux.
