Browse Nautilus as root

Nautilus as root is a software that simplifies the process of browsing system files as root. As someone who is less technically inclined, I found it frustrating when expert users would tell me to use complicated, ten-step processes to edit configuration files using vi. A friend recommended that I try entering sudo nautilus into the terminal instead, which worked fine but still required two steps: entering sudo nautilus and the associated password.

With Nautilus as root, I only have to enter my password once in the terminal, which makes things much easier. After downloading the software, all I had to do was right-click and select Properties, then go to Permissions and check "Allow executing file as program". From there, I can simply double-click to launch and select "Run in terminal".

While the software is functional, it does come with a minor security issue. On Ubuntu 7.10 (the only system I've tested it on), I don't always have to enter my password to enter the root Nautilus window. After the first time I run the script, I can access the window again even if I've closed the root Nautilus window and terminal.

Overall, Nautilus as root has been very helpful in streamlining my file browsing process, and I hope to see someone develop a GUI for the password entry in the future. Though I would personally love to do it myself, unfortunately, I lack the technical expertise to tackle a task like that.
