Developed by CoralReef Team
CoralReef is a comprehensive software suite developed by CAIDA that allows users to collect and analyze data from passive Internet traffic monitors. This software suite supports realtime monitoring through system network interfaces using libpcap, FreeBSD drivers for Apptel POINT and FORE ATM cards, and Linux and FreeBSD drivers for Endace DAG cards. The package also includes programming APIs for both C and perl, as well as applications for capture, analysis, and web report generation.

The CoralReef project is maintained by CAIDA developers in collaboration with the Internet measurement community. CoralReef is the successor of its predecessor, the Coral package. The development philosophy behind CoralReef stems from its origins as a project that monitored the OC3mon and OC12mon activity of MCI.

The current version of CoralReef supports ATM and POS devices at bandwidths of OC3 and OC12 on Intel-based workstations running FreeBSD or Linux, and standard network interfaces on most Unix-like systems via libpcap. CoralReef also includes software for analyzing traces collected by these types of monitors.

The CoralReef suite contains drivers, libraries, utilities, and analysis software for passive network measurement. While the package includes many ready-made solutions, it is still evolving, with plans to refine and enhance its functionality and ease of use in the near future.

The CoralReef software is known to work under FreeBSD, Linux, and Solaris, and it is expected to work under most other Unix-like systems. However, the Apptel POINT and FORE ATM card drivers work only under FreeBSD, and the DAG card is supported only under Linux. The release includes utilities that are still being developed, and feedback, requests, and improvements are welcomed and can be sent to [email protected].

In March 1999, CoralReef 3.0 marked a significant breakthrough in the evolution of the CoralReef suite with the release of the libcoral set of core monitoring libraries. The libcoral library serves as the foundation for the entire CoralReef suite. While CoralReef 3.0 does not represent a "plug and play" solution, the release of the libcoral library and its associated API makes it easier for developers to create traffic analysis software.

The CAIDA development team plans to encourage the research and professional community to use CoralReef to develop their own Internet traffic analysis tools, with the hopes of implementing a more rapid, incremental development cycle. The team welcomes feedback and constructive criticism on this effort.
