cb dusk

I recently tried out the cb dusk (cbd) software, which promises to generate an image that mimics the appearance of the sky just after sunset. Upon installation, the image is automatically rendered to the X root window, which most users will recognize as their desktop background.

I found that cb dusk worked well out of the box with simpler window managers like fluxbox or afterstep. However, I did encounter some issues with larger desktop environments that tend to overlay the root window. In order to make cbd visible, I had to inhibit this overlay feature.

Specifically, I found that GNOME nautilus drew over the root window, which prevented the cbd image from being displayed. However, I was able to resolve this issue by editing the show_desktop gconf entry.

For those looking to use cb dusk, the software has a few requirements. The gdk compilation can be easily accomplished using the command "$ make," and the software can be installed with "# make install."

In terms of usage, cb dusk offers several options, including the ability to seed the random number generator with the -e command, and to set the number of seconds between updates with the -d command. Additionally, users can choose to run cb dusk quietly with the -q command or increase the verbosity level with -v. Overall, I found cb dusk to be a unique and worthwhile addition to my desktop environment.
