comic2email

February 11, 2006
Comic2email is a tool for receiving web-based comics directly in your email. It allows you to effortlessly download your favorite comics and have them automatically delivered to your inbox.

Comic2email is an innovative software that allows you to retrieve your favorite web-based comics straight to your inbox without any hassle. As an avid email user with a preference for IMAP, I could not be happier with this script. Even though I have resorted to using POP3 to enable Gmail's filtering capabilities, comic2email is one more addition to my life which helps me stay organized and on top of my game.

The software's unique selling point lies in the convenience it offers to its users. Instead of combing through webcomic archives or subscribing to RSS feeds, comic2email does the work for you. I used to subscribe to a lot of RSS feeds, but was disappointed with the inconsistency among feeds, forcing me into a perpetual state of having to chase the content I desired. This software basically subscribes to those feeds for you and ensures that they are delivered to your inbox regularly.

However, some may have concerns about how the artists of these webcomics will earn money from their work. To put your mind at ease, every email delivered by comic2email contains a direct link to the comic's online shop or donation page, ensuring that the creators get paid.

Comic2email is incredibly easy to install and operate, with the only prerequisite being Python, an email server (to send mail, send mail compatible), and an internet connection. Most modern Unix systems would already have these requirements pre-installed, so there's no need for big downloads to get started.

Using regular expressions, comics are downloaded from a range of popular web-based comics, and it takes about 2 minutes to add a new comic. The default installation comes bundled with User Friendly, PC Weenies, and Penny Arcade, and adding new comics is as simple as copying and pasting the appropriate code into the config file.

In the latest release, comic2email has added several features that help users run the software more efficiently. The new "debug", "test single comic", and "verbose" modes allow users to monitor the tool's performance more closely. Comic2email now supports up to 3,000 webcomics, and logs network and regex errors and continues to run seamlessly without interrupting users. Overall, comic2email is a recommended tool for those who want to keep their inboxes clutter-free while still enjoying their favorite web-based comics.
