dv2jpg

November 21, 2007
Dv2jpg converts digital video (DV) AVI files to MJPEG-encoded AVI files, simplifying the process of converting videos to a new format. The software is designed to be user-friendly and efficient.

Dv2jpg is an efficient digital video converter that can convert an incoming Audio/Video stream from DV AVI to MJPEG-encoded AVI format. The conversion process resizes the incoming stream from 720x480 29.970fps 48khz to 352x240 29.970fps 48khz MJPEG-encoded format. For PAL, frame sizes are adjusted slightly.

To use Dv2jpg, you need to install certain requirements including dvgrab, Linux firewire card, avilib, libdv, and MJPEG tools plus avilib converter. After installing these packages, make sure that the VIDEO is defined appropriately in the makefile. Then, you can build two executable files "dv2jpg" and "avijoin" by typing 'make.'

The usage of Dv2jpg involves several steps. First, create an AVI file of about 4.5 minutes using dvgrab with the --format dv2 parameter. You can use one GB of storage for each AVI file. In the next step, convert the DV AVI files to MJPEG-encoded AVIs using the command "dv2jpg dvavi mjpegavi." These files will take less disk space. To join the six such AVIs, use "avijoin showname_1-6.avi show1.avi show2.avi show3.avi show4.avi show5.avi show6.avi." The max length of MJPEG-encoded AVI file is about half an hour or one GB.

Next, convert the audio to MPEG by downsampling it to 44100khz using the command "lav2wav showname_1-6.avi | mp2enc -v -o showname_1-6_a.mpg." For video conversion to MPEG format, use "lav2yuv showname_1-6.avi | mpeg2enc -m 1 -b 1152 -o showname_1-6_v.mpg -r 32 -4 1 -2 1 -h." Join the video and audio using mjpeg tools with "mplex -m 1 -f 1 showname_1-6_v.mpg showname_1-6_a.mpg showname_1-6.mpg." This process can be repeated for segments 7-12 to obtain an hour's worth of MPEG-encoded video in two pieces.

In the final step, use vcdtools and cdrdao to burn the two segments to VCD. Make sure to use CDRWs instead of CDRs as the latter may not work. Insert the VCD into a DVD player or use the 'mtv' package to play the video successfully.

Overall, Dv2jpg is an excellent software solution for converting DV AVI files to MJPEG-encoded AVI format with great efficiency. The detailed installation and usage instructions make it easy to use for anyone with a little knowledge of Linux command line. Enjoying the video output is the most enjoyable final step of using this software.
