Developed by Doug Winter
EXACT is a UNIX daemon designed for those who operate mail servers and wish to allow mail relaying, on condition that users authenticate to an IMAP or POP server. This handy tool supports a variety of IMAP/POP servers and MTAs out of the box, including UW-imap, Qpopper, Cyrus, Perdition, TeaPOP, cucipop, EXIM, Postfix, and Sendmail.

Installation is hassle-free thanks to the `configure' shell script, which helps to guess the values of various system-dependent variables used during compilation. Using the guessed values, it creates a `Makefile' in each directory of the package, together with one or more `.h' files containing system-dependent definitions. Additionally, it creates a shell script `config.status' that can be run later to recreate the present configuration, a file `config.cache' that saves the results of its tests to speed up reconfiguring, as well as a file `config.log' containing compiler output, mainly for debugging `configure'.

The process of compiling the package is straightforward. Start by `cd'ing to the directory containing the package's source code and type `./configure' to configure the package for your system. If you're using `csh' on an old version of System V, you might need to type `sh ./configure' instead to prevent `csh' from trying to execute `configure' itself. Running `configure' takes some time, and while running, it prints some messages telling which features it is checking for.

Once configuration is complete, type `make' to compile the package. You can then optionally type `make check' to run any self-tests that come with the package. Finally, type `make install' to install the programs, any data files, and documentation. If you don't need the program binaries and object files, you can remove them from the source code directory by typing `make clean'. To remove the files created by `configure' as well, so you can compile the package for a different kind of computer, type `make distclean', while `make maintainer-clean' target is intended mainly for the package developers.

The latest bugfix release addresses a problem where building without db didn't work, while also changing back to dbmnz format for the db since the other format seemed to cause exim problems. Overall, EXACT is an easy-to-use and reliable mail relay control tool that's perfect for UNIX users.
