Foresight Linux is a Linux distribution that presents the latest features from GNOME project, founded on Specifix Linux.
Foresight Linux OS is a distribution that focuses on showcasing some of the latest and greatest features from GNOME. Unlike other distributions, Foresight Linux includes some of the more innovative and less mature tools such as Beagle, F-Spot, Howl, and the latest hal. Additionally, it provides nice and clean default themes and artwork for an overall seamless experience.
Foresight Linux is built using the conary package management system, which is a way of managing software using a loosely knit group of network repositories. Package management involves four basic operations: querying, installing, upgrading, and removing. Conary makes it very simple to execute these operations with its included tools.
To query, there are two types of searches that you can do: local and remote. A local search queries locally installed software, whereas a remote search queries network repositories for available software. For example, you can use the conary command with the "q" argument and the package name "firefox" to see what version of Firefox you have installed.
To install or upgrade a package, simply run the conary command with the argument "update". There is no feedback on success, so make sure to wait for a while until the operation is completed. Similarly, to remove a package, you can use the "erase" argument with the package name.
For checking out of date packages, Foresight Linux provides a useful utility called "yuck", which compares your versions of packages to those available from the repository. Yuck can also update those packages (requires root). You can specify a comma-separated list of exceptions and exclude the kernel from updates. For updating the kernel, you can use "conary update --keep-existing kernel".
