FRET

FRET is a powerful *nix command line tool that can examine any file or files and identify data structures and patterns within them. This tool uses heuristic algorithms to scan the files and identify structures before comparing them to find common patterns. The results are then ranked using a probabilistic approach, and a sorted list of detected structures is outputted. This list of structures can then be parsed by other tools and scripts.

FRET makes use of a library called libfret, which provides a clear interface for the analysis of buffers of raw data. The library has been designed to integrate with a range of other programs such as hex editors, packet analyzers, and other development tools. Both FRET and libfret are still in the early stages of development and do not yet offer a lot of useful functionality.

When using FRET, you can scan a single or multiple files (buffers) and currently identify structures such as data that is common to multiple files or buffers, arrays of ASCII bytes, arrays of fill bytes, and offsets to other fields in a file.

Some new features have been added to FRET in the latest release. The new --phase and --scan options allow specific tests to be performed, and the results list has been made clearer. Additionally, some internal redesign streamlined the code, making FRET even more powerful and user-friendly.
