Developed by GNUstep Team
GNUstep is a versatile cross-platform framework designed for desktop application development, built on NeXT's OpenStep specification, now owned by Apple. It allows developers to create complex software quickly with reusable software components. This powerful framework has been employed in various production environments across several organizations.

The software contains an object-oriented development kit which includes two core packages, GNUstep-make, and GNUstep-base. These packages provide a complete system for writing non-graphic tools in Objective-C. With GNUstep-make, you can establish a powerful and straightforward system for building and packaging your tools. GNUstep-base includes all the necessary classes for writing an extensive range of tools from system tool wrappers to communication tools with web and other servers.

The version offers a graphical development kit that contains classes for developing a complete graphical application suited for various applications. The object-oriented, graphical development applications, ProjectCenter, and Gorm simplify building complex commercial applications without having to wait for years or never release them in other development environments.

Aside from the software's core toolkits, many applications have been specifically written to provide a powerful user experience for maximizing productivity while working on your computer. GNUstep's workspace manager, GWorkspace, and mail client, GNUMail, are some examples of such applications.

GNUstep's software does not have a pre-installed window manager, but users have the flexibility to select any window manager of their choosing, though they recommend WindowMaker for an improved experience. Additionally, the software does not provide all the desktop applications that you may require, but there are many ideas about what a desktop should look like that the GNUstep development team has not decided to endorse. Nonetheless, some excellent desktop applications to consider include Project Backbone and Etoile.
