GPM

GPM is a versatile mouse server that caters to both console and xterm, providing sample clients that include Emacs and more. It aims to enhance the server capacity of applications running on Linux console through its GPM daemon. The initial code for this amazing package comes from the "selection" package by Andrew Haylett, and it has grown since then.

Notably, GPM offers additional facilities that make it a more robust replacement for "selection." Starting from version 0.18, it has better support for xterm, which affords users the ability to run mouse-sensitive applications under X. Additionally, it's reasonably effortless to develop curses applications that support the mouse on both the Linux console and xterm, considering GPM's portable nature to any Unix flavor.

So far, GPM has got many impressive clients, such as The Midnight Commander by Miguel de Icaza and an Emacs library. Furthermore, recent dialog distributions and the Jed editor rely on GPM, along with custom applications.

Despite its impressive features, GPM still has some unexplored regions, such as the need for clean devfs support. While some code snippets need cleaning up, you can easily make a patch to GPM by reading doc/HACK_GPM. Overall, GPM offers a reliable server option for a more convenient and productive console and xterm experience.
