Kassie is a replacement applet for Kate's icon in the Kicker panel, designed to allow more advanced session selection features. It simplifies the user's workflow and is highly efficient in its operation.
Kassie (Kate Advanced Session Selector) is an excellent replacement application designed to replace Kate's default icon in your Kicker panel. This project has been developed to cater to three major purposes, including Session Selector, Drop Manager, and Session Switcher.
The Session Selector functionality allows users to click on Kassie's icon and display a popup menu that contains all available sessions that are known by Kate. One can conveniently select any session to open or access. Moreover, if an already running session exists, it gets marked with an icon, and one can click on it, which will bring it to the forefront. This feature includes the window restoration and allows desktop switch.
The Drop Manager feature lets users drop files on Kassie's icon, and a subsequent popup menu appears, allowing them to choose where they want to open these files. The popup menu enables users to select one of the running sessions or create a new one and give it a name. This allows users to drop files in any Kate's window, even when it is not visible.
The Session Switcher allows users to click on Kassie's icon while holding Shift, Control, Alt, or Meta. This opens a popup menu listing all running instances of Kate, allowing users to jump from one session to another. Additionally, it automatically restores the window and Switches desktop if it is required.
All three menus in Kassie contain the entry "Start Kate" that mimics the behavior of Kate's icon when you click it or drop files on it, creating sessions without a name, which is displayed as "(Anonymous)" by Kassie.
To use Kassie, you need to have Kate and KDE on your device. The latest release of Kassie (Kate Advanced Session Selector) boasts a modified session selector/switcher, which has now been combined into one menu that contains both running sessions (if any) and all the available sessions. Users no longer have to use the keyboard to navigate. Moreover, there is a cut-down version available without drag and drop management as a KMenu extension.
