KScannerButtons is an innovative software that offers a user-friendly interface for managing your scanner buttons. This software comes in two parts: a daemon and a KDE application to empower users with the ability to monitor scanner buttons seamlessly. With this software, you can easily perform a wide range of tasks such as copying with a single press, sending paper documents via email, and opening paper documents in Gimp—all with just a single button press.

The daemon in KScannerButtons is known as sanebuttond and offers a high level of functionality for the smooth running of the software. The frontend offers an icon in the systray, and a dialog box for configuration and to launch the daemon-KScannerButtons.kmdr.

KScannerButtons is designed with the monitoring capabilities found in various SANE backends. The software has been extensively tested with the avision backend and an HP 5300C scanner. The fujitsu backend monitoring has never been tested, but it is known to be supported by some mailing lists. KScannerButtons can be used outside the KDE environment for additional versatility.

To use KScannerButtons, you will need to have SANE and KDE installed on your system. Some of the exciting new features of this software include a graphical interface with a button to refresh the list of scanners, translations into Czech, Brazilian Portuguese, and Spanish languages.

The software supports several backends such as hp3900 and plustek, meaning that you can use it on different brands of scanners. It also comes with several command line options that make it quite an easy-to-use application. You can debug and test new backends, and use it from the command line seamlessly.

Other notable improvements in this update include a reworked Makefile, where "make install" now installs the files in standard places. An icon is created in the K menu under "Graphics" (/usr/share/applnk/Graphics/). "make kdeinstall" still exists, and you can easily rework the test script path from the configuration. Finally, the daemon script is located in ~/.kscannerbuttons, and this eliminates the need to plug or unplug the scanner after stopping the daemon from the GUI.
