Kwmnet is a WindowMaker applet software that originates from the fork of the popular wmnet applet. It offers features that allow network monitoring and displays real-time statistics.
The kwmnet project is a fork of the popular wmnet WindowMaker applet. As someone who doesn't want the KDE system monitor + sysguard cluttering up my desktop with its sluggishness and constant ksysguardd requests, I was excited to try out the initial alpha release of kwmnet.
What I found was a simple applet that shows a fast-moving network device monitor in your kicker panel. The developer took the wmnet sources, removed all the X Window initialization stuff, and used it as a library for drawing in a window of a simple KDE panel applet. They also rewrote the code for the /proc/net/dev driver to correctly read /proc/net/dev entries.
Before compiling, you'll need to edit string 44 in the src/kwmnet.cpp file to set your device, speed, and other settings. All the settings are the same as in the good old wmnet.
It's stable and fast right now, but it still needs a GUI configurator. To compile, just enter "./configure --libdir=/your/kde/applets/dir make make install" and then add the "wmnet" applet to your panel. If you change something, recompile and reinstall the applet, open the console, kill and then start the "kicker" application - kicker will start with the new version of the applet, and you'll be able to see your changes.
Requirements for kwmnet include KDE 3.x. In this release, the code has been cleaned up and GUI configurator improvements have been made. Overall, I found kwmnet to be a fast and effective replacement for the KDE system monitor + sysguard.
