Kysrun is a desktop application enabling users to launch applications, bookmarks and documents with minimal keystrokes.
Kysrun is an excellent software tool designed for desktops that allows you to start applications, bookmarks, and open documents with just a few keystrokes. Its main advantage is that it is much faster than hunting for the requested app in menus and submenus. Kysrun has few dependencies like python, pyqt, and qt 3 and was originally written for the ASUS Eee PC. Inspiration was taken from application launchers like Katapult, Launchy, or Mercury.
To use Kysrun, press the ALT key together with SPACE bar to pop up Kysrun. The first time you use Kysrun, it automatically indexes all the installed desktop applications, the documents and movies in your home directory, and your bookmarks in Firefox. As soon as you start typing, Kysrun displays the action it has found. If the proposed action matches your needs, press enter, and Kysrun will start the application.
For example, if you want to start the text editor, type "text editor." After typing "tex," Kysrun will find the "Text Editor." Press enter, and the Text Editor starts. In the same way, you can open bookmarked pages in Firefox, open documents, and search something with Google by typing "google" followed by a space and your search string.
For quick computations, type them in Kysrun, and the result will be displayed as you type. Kysrun generates its database the first time you use it. To make Kysrun update its database to add new files, applications or bookmarks, start Kysrun and type until you get "RebuildKysrunDatabase" and press enter.
To change the file types that get indexed, you can edit the start of the file proposers.py. Currently, Kysrun indexes files with xls, ods, doc, mp3, mpg, wma, avi, and wmv extensions. Kysrun requires Python.
To install Kysrun, download the package, unpack it in your user directory, and open the "kysrun" directory. Double-click on "setup-shortcut.py" to install Kysrun in the menus and configure the keyboard shortcut in IceWM and Compiz. If you use another desktop environment, configure your system to associate the Alt+Space shortcut or any other shortcut with the Kysrun program.
The new release of Kysrun includes various improvements like fixating the window size, smarter suggestion based on recent hits, not finding files in hidden directories or following symlinks to avoid loops, much faster file indexing code, displaying a list of most recently started actions on startup and displaying the selected result with details prominently at the top.
