Linux trustees

The Linux Trustees project seeks to provide an advanced permission management system tailored to Linux. Its inspiration is derived from the Java security API and Novell Netware approach. It leverages trustee objects that can be bound to each file or directory to guarantee access to said file(s) or directory(s) with subdirectories. It ensures that a certain user or group is either allowed or denied access. Similarly, it also provides an option to grant access to everyone but a specific user or group. POSIX ACLs are similar to trustees, notwithstanding trustees' advantage of affecting subdirectory trees as opposed to a single file.

Moreover, Trustees is compatible with the Linux Kernel 2.6, but before installation, a few requirements must be met. These are a 2.6 Linux Kernel source and basic GNU compiling tools like gcc and make. Once these are satisfied, installation of the kernel module can be done with make install by entering the module/ directory. However, if the makefile fails to detect your kernel source directory, the following command could be tried: make KDIR=/path/to/src/linux-2.6.x install. The settrustees tool can be built by typing 'make' in the src/ directory.

This release packs some updates, including correctly compiling on 2.6.12 or newer and more closely emulating building within the kernel tree. Notably, the buffer size calculation error has been resolved, reducing memory corruption. The release is deemed stable since the SVN trunk will go back to being highly unstable, as a significant code overhaul is necessary to address trustees' hard-linked files' problems and bring the code entirely valid for the 2.6 kernel.
