Luma Toy is a plug-in for Final Cut Pro that began as a simple fix for blowouts. The idea was that if one channel's levels were too high, the luminance from another channel wouldn't be able to build. However, it was discovered that this resulted in altering the image's appearance, which wasn't always a bad thing. Consequently, the LumaToy filter was created.
Using this filter, there are 'looks' that can't be achieved with any other method. One example is the Infra Red film style, which you can obtain by taking the luminance from the red channel and sliding Chroma Reduction all the way up.
The Luma Toy filter comes with an installer. If your internet browser doesn't automatically unzip and begin the installation, you'll need to do so manually and open the package. You'll find the filter under Effects/Video Filters/Sheffield Softworks in the menu.
