Aleph One is a free, multi-platform game engine for first-person shooter games. It is open-source and offers a variety of scenarios for players to enjoy.
I recently had the pleasure of trying out Eternal, a scenario for Aleph One, the open-source first-person-shooter engine based on Bungie's Marathon engine. This free game is truly impressive, featuring a nearly total conversion with all-new maps, weapons, music, textures, and interface. Additionally, several new characters and creatures have been introduced, alongside the full cast from the original trilogy and familiar locations.
The story takes place 94 years in the future, after the Marathon trilogy ended. You suddenly find yourself on the S'pht moon K'lia, orbiting a desolate and damaged Earth. It's clear that all is not well with this future, and it's up to you to save humanity once again. The people of this time believe that nobody won the war against the Pfhor. However, with the help of Jjaro technology, a plan has been developed to fix things.
Paired with the former Battleroid known as Hathor, you have been chosen to travel back in time to the U.E.S.C. Marathon 111 years in the past. Your mission is to set in motion a plan that will change the course of history and bring victory to humankind. However, things don't always go according to plan, and what starts as a mission to correct history turns into an epic pursuit that spans centuries and the stars.
One thing to keep in mind is that, to install Eternal X, you'll need to download Aleph One and place the Aleph One application program into the Eternal folder. Afterward, you can launch Aleph One and start playing. Overall, I have to say that Eternal is a fantastic game that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for an immersive and challenging first-person shooter experience.
