md5i

I recently used a Java program called md5i, which is a file integrity checker. It creates an MD5 database of all files in a specified directory structure and allows the user to easily recheck the contents of the directory and notify them if any files have changed. This program currently does not detect removed files.

The md5i software only computes the MD5 sum if the "last modified" timestamp of the file has changed since the last run, unless the -nomtime option is used. This option ignores file timestamps. The usage of this software involves using various options such as -db, -v, -nomtime, -updatedb, -scan, -check, and -alwaysignore.

The program allows the user to specify a file to store the file data, including the default option of ~/.md5database. The -v option provides progress information, and the -updatedb option updates the database instead of creating a new one. The scan options include the ability to specify a directory to scan and all its sub-directories.

The check options allow the user to check all files in a specified directory and its sub-directories. The -alwaysignore option is useful when the user wants to skip prompt alerts for modified files and only report and ignore them. Overall, md5i is a useful tool for file integrity checking and ensures file consistency.
