MNG Component

The MNG Component software is a suite of QuickTime components with an image compressor/decompressor, graphics importer, movie importer, and movie exporter. Its main objective is to make the MNG format accessible through QuickTime. Although MNG files are not that common, the software intends to use MNG as a superior compression algorithm for sequences of computer-generated images, such as screen captures. The MNG format allows for much greater compression than the Animation and Graphics codecs which have been standard parts of QuickTime for the past decade.

One of the key features of the MNG Component is its ImageCodec, which allows QuickTime to create movie files that use the MNG codec for encoding video data. These MNG tracks can be played back and edited just like any other QuickTime video track. In addition, the MovieImporter feature enables QuickTime-savvy applications to import MNG documents in place. Similarly, the GraphicsImporter allows QuickTime-savvy applications to import MNG files as still images.

Finally, the MovieExporter feature allows the video track of any QuickTime movies to be exported as an MNG document.
