MP3c

July 31, 2006
MP3c is a software that uniquely allows users to convert their audio CDs into mp3/ogg forms effortlessly.
Version 0.31
License GPL
Platform Linux
Supported Languages English
Homepage ftp.wspse.de
Developed by Matthias Hensler
MP3c is a specialized program designed to facilitate the conversion of audio CDs to ogg/mp3 format. This program acts as a frontend for all grab-programs and mp3-encoders. It supports just about everything you could want it to. MP3c includes two different run-modes.

First, there is an interactive mode with a menu environment that is based on curses-lib, which can be used on text consoles as well as X11. The second mode is a batch mode that allows for automatic encoding of CDs within shell scripts, for example, at night within cronjobs.

There are two different possibilities for encoding, depending on your ripper and encoder. Non-Fly encoding is where an audio track is first grabbed from CD and then encoded. On-Fly encoding combines grabbing and encoding into one step. Non-Fly encoding is generally recommended since your CD-ROM drive doesn't have to work all the time. Additionally, some encoders will produce a "click" at the beginning of mp3/ogg files if On-Fly encoding is used. The only disadvantage of Non-Fly encoding is that there is a temp-file, which can grow up to 50-100 MB sometimes.

MP3c uses the CDDB database for song title information on your CDs. In contrast to other programs, this program's CDDB-entry is detailedly analyzed to find every information even for sampler-CDs. The creation of filenames is user-defined. You can use patterns to constitute the appearance of your mp3-files individually. Furthermore, you can decide how spaces within filenames should be handled. You can allow them, convert them to underscores "_" or just kill them.

An interesting feature of MP3c is the possibility of shell script creation. It contains all the functionality for encoding your CDs. You can start these scripts as daemon processes or run them at night inside a cronjob.

Recommended programs for the use of MP3c are: CDparanoia as audio-CD grabber, Encoder as MP3-encoder, and MP3info for creating MP3-ID-tags. For OGG, use oggenc. If you need, you can download these programs here or a complete package with these programs inside. Furthermore, you can download runnable binaries, but only for glibc 2.1 (Linux i386) at the moment. If you like to create RPMs and/or binaries for other systems and libraries, please send them to me, so that I can put them on my page.

This release of MP3c includes the switch to CDDB protocol level 5 to support detection and saving of year and genre information.
