In order to mitigate this issue, it is possible to use a microphone to measure the power response in the listening position and implement a precisely tuned equalizer that minimizes the negative impact of the room on the sound. Commercial systems such as Roister and Tact Audio exist for this purpose, but they are often prohibitively expensive.
The software suite presented here is a complete room equalization system, with the exception of the hardware which you may already own. The release includes a newly added component called fird, which is a FIR filter designer. However, it currently lacks psycho-acoustic features. Additionally, there is a fast convolver called fconv, which is a quick hack with ugly code and various missing features. However, this component is useful for demonstrating the much faster performance of fast convolution over time domain convolution (which is what nwfiir performs). Finally, several Makefile issues have been rectified in this release.
