NYCompressor

In my experience, the NYCompressor is an excellent tool for compressing audio signals. The objective of this software is to equalize the volume level by reducing the peaks in the signal and thus increasing the overall level. By doing so, it delivers a more impactful and punchy sound. I particularly appreciated the fact that the NYCompressor provides an array of controls such as threshold, ratio, attack, and release.

You can customize the attack time, for instance, to control how quickly the compressor reacts when it detects an input level above the compression threshold. Similarly, the release time controls the speed at which the gain reduction is released when the input signal falls below the threshold. It's important to adjust these timings to match the signal that you are compressing for the best possible results. Shorter times are usually better for percussive signals, while vocals and guitars typically require longer timings.

What's more, the release time can also be used for artistic purposes in creating a "pumping" effect. The recommended release time is roughly several hundred milliseconds. The actual value depends on the beats per minute of the track in question.

NYCompressor is available as both an Audio Unit (AU) and Virtual Studio Technology (VST) version. Choose the option that works with your host program. You can store the .component file in your AU component directory (usually /Library/Audio/Plugins/Components) if you choose the AU version. For the VST version, the appropriate VST directory is typically /Library/Audio/Plugins/VST).
