Open LMS

The Open LMS project is an impressive learning management system that has been developed by the Department of Geography at NTNU. It has been in use at the department for three years and has become a fully functional LMS that supports group collaboration, file sharing, distribution of lectures, and a range of other features that make it an ideal tool for modern learners.

One of the primary benefits of OpenLMS is its ability to distribute lecture notes to groups of students in an organized and efficient manner. Additionally, it facilitates collaboration between both students and teachers, leading to a more productive and engaging learning experience.

Since its inception, OpenLMS has undergone continuous development and is now available as open-source software. It currently supports both English and Norwegian languages, with efforts underway to translate it into other languages in the future.

OpenLMS is compatible with important learning management standards like Scorm, Dublin Core, and AICC. The development team is working to incorporate support for exporting objects that adhere to these standards in the future. However, they recognize that focusing too heavily on these standards can overshadow the need for a culture of sharing within the organizations that use the LMS/LCMS.

As such, the team is carefully balancing the benefits of adherence to standards with the importance of creating an environment in which users are encouraged to share and collaborate. Overall, OpenLMS is a powerful and versatile learning management system that has a bright future ahead of it.
