OthBase is a software that offers an Othello game experience to its users.
Being an avid player of Othello for over three decades, I have tried out several tools and programs to enhance my skills over the years. While Thor, Cassio, and WZebra have been my preferred tools for studying the game, I have often faced a common drawback with all of them - their compatibility with just one OS platform.
This is where the OthBase project comes in. It was established in November 2002 after a series of observations. Firstly, there was no cross-platform Othello database program that was available on multiple platforms; players had to use different tools on various OS like MacOS 9.X, or Windows to study tournament-level games. Secondly, while Othello database programs were available, they were limited to specific platforms, with no programs available on the Java and Linux platforms.
Additionally, there was always a manual requirement to update databases when using Cassio or WZebra, which could be cumbersome. As a result, the goal of OthBase was to develop a Java-based database program that would be the same on all OS platforms and could support popular game file formats, including Thor, XOF, SGF, PGN, and Cassio.
The program provides key features like support for different database formats, including XOF, Thor, PGN, GGF, and Yahoo! Japan logs from Uniyma. It also allows users to create, read, import, and save XOF database files, synchronize Thor database directories with an FTP server, and read and import PGN or GGF database files. Other key database management features include in-memory database merge through import, database filtering on tournament and player name with support of complex boolean filters, and on-the-fly computed statistics for in-memory databases.
For game management, OthBase has features such as playing a game with backward, forward, go to start and end options, mouse wheel support for fast move forward and backward, entering the game as a sequence of moves on the board or a diagram, copying move lists or position, dragging and dropping a game from game list to Othello board, showing the game diagram, and clicking to move through the game.
Lastly, the program allows users to manage games with bookmarks, set or unset games bookmarked, and delete games from the in-memory database. Further, OthBase allows developers to add plugins to introduce new and exciting features to the tool to meet the needs of Othello players in a responsive way.
