OutMan is a software designed to manage output processes.
OutMan is an output manager software that captures the output from command line based programs, such as make. It organizes the output into a list that can be easily navigated. The program also facilitates opening a text editor for the associated file by clicking on a line of output. This simplifies error debugging in make, as it quickly directs users to the line where the error occurred.
Although make is often associated with OutMan, the program is versatile, and it works with most variants of grep and any other program that uses the "file_name:line_number:" style of output, with no modification required. Additionally, custom filters can be built to deal with the output from just about any program. A filter to parse the output from ctags is included.
OutMan requires Gnome and Gtk 1.0 or newer to run. The installation process is straightforward and can be done by uncompressing the archive file and running the configure/make/make install commands. The process may require you to be the root user, and "x.x" in the commands should be replaced with the version number that you downloaded.
The software can be run from the command line by typing "outman" or from the "Utilities" sub-menu of the Gnome menu. The online help provides additional information, which can be accessed through the help menu in OutMan.
However, OutMan has some limitations. Going from version 1.0 to 1.1, the programming interface to GTK was changed in a non-backwards compatible way. As a result, OutMan won't compile if you have GTK-- 1.1 installed. When a stable release of GTK-- 1.1 is made, OutMan will be updated to be compatible. Also, if OutMan crashes while running in server mode, it won't be possible to run an OutMan server under that name again until the server name has been removed from "~/.OutMan/server.ior." However, the functionality required for OutMan to be able to do this automatically hasn't been implemented in Orbit yet.
