PieDock is a software tool that functions as a task bar and application launcher. Its user-interface is designed as a pie menu of icons. To install PieDock, there are a few requirements for your system including a C++ compiler, make, X11 (headers and libraries), and libpng (headers and libraries). Once you've confirmed that your system meets these requirements, you can proceed with the download and installation.

Downloading and installing PieDock involves downloading the tarball and unpacking it. Then you'll need to navigate to the new directory and complete the compilation process by running a make command. Once PieDock is compiled, you can place the executable file in any desired location in your path. This could include a specific location for a local install or a location available to all users, which would require root permissions.

Configuration is necessary to optimize PieDock to your preferences. Configuring PieDock involves finding high-resolution icons in PNG format that you like and saving them in a new directory created in your home directory named ".PieDock". A ".PieDockrc" configuration file must also be created using "res/PieDockrc.sample" as a template. You can edit this configuration file to include the desired application names and their corresponding icons. The file format is simple and involves specifying a statement and then listing corresponding arguments.

Additionally, there are two important statements: sticky and alias. The sticky statement allows you to specify persistent icons that will always appear in the menu. The alias statement is used to recognize windows that do not have the correct name of their corresponding executable. There is a "utils" subdirectory in the source directory which contains a helpful utility to find the right settings. After compiling it, you can use the information to set up aliases for windows.

Lastly, PieDock comes equipped with a "trigger button" directive. Users can assign a specific button on their mouse to open the pie menu by using this directive. By running the xev utility, you can confirm which number corresponds to the desired button. Once the directive is set up, users can open the menu by clicking the assigned button.
