Pnxsmbtool is a user-friendly tool for effortlessly configuring a Samba server suitable for a small office or home network.
The Pnxsmbtool project is an efficient and user-friendly wizard for setting up a Samba server that is ideal for home or small office networks. This tool will be shipped with the upcoming PhoeNUX-OS distribution. However, for installation on other operating systems, users may need to install additional dependencies as specified in the Requirements section below.
To install Pnxsmbtool, start by untarring the application by running the command "tar -xvjf pnxsmbtool-XXX.tar.bz2," where 'XXX' represents the version number. Next, navigate to the directory and run "make install" as the root user. Once installed, run the tool as described below. Note that 'make' is no longer required since the necessary Perl modules have been pre-generated.
To use Pnxsmbtool, execute the command "pnxsmbtool" as the root user and follow the on-screen instructions. However, it's important to note that migrating UNIX user accounts to Samba can be challenging, as it relies on KSambaPlugin's tool to perform this migration. Sadly, KSambaPlugin is known to be problematic, and users may have to add users to the "smbpasswd" manually. If a new tool is required to address this issue, it will be included as part of the Pnxsmbtool distribution, which non-PhoeNUX users might find useful. Additionally, the UNIX user manager is hardcoded as 'pnxuser', a feature that might not be available on non-PhoeNUX systems.
It's worth noting that only Red Hat-based systems such as Fedora, Mandriva, etc., are currently supported by Pnxsmbtool. Hopefully, future releases will support other systems to enhance user convenience.
