I recently had the opportunity to play pyHalebarde, a game that offers an adaptation of the classic "Halebarde et Gonfanon" board game. Written in Python/PyGame, this software offers a fun and engaging gaming experience for anyone interested in classic board games.
To launch the game, simply enter "python pyhalebarde" in a console or double-click on the "pyhalebarde" file. It should be noted that in order to run pyHalebarde, you must have Python, Pygame and Python-json installed on your system. If these are not already installed, you can easily install them by running "./setup.py install" as root.
One feature that I found particularly interesting was the ability to create your own skin for the game. While documentation for this feature is not yet available, it is fairly straightforward to get started. Simply take a look at the "themes" folder included with the game to get an idea of what to do. If you create a particularly nice theme, be sure to send it to the developers so that it can be included in future releases.
Currently, there are only two themes available: wesnoth and retro (the latter was my first attempt at graphic design and took only 30 seconds to complete in GIMP!). To use a custom theme, launch the game with the following command: "python pyhalebarde [theme name]". For example, to use the retro theme, you would launch the game with "python pyhalebarde retro". However, be aware that there are currently some transparency issues with the retro theme that will be addressed in a future update.
In terms of the interface, the game is mouse-oriented and turns end with the "enter" key. As for the rules of the game, they are straightforward and easy to follow. One notable difference between pyHalebarde and the original game is that the "guetteur" units are called "saboteur" in this adaptation.
