Python CD

Python CD is a bootable CD that is based on Debian GNU/Linux and KNOPPIX. This CD is unique as it is loaded with lots of Python applications. In the top-level directory of the CD, one can find a directory called "python/" that contains numerous Python packages.

Python, which is pre-installed on the bootable Linux system, is ready to run in the background. The system comes with Python 2.3.4, and two previous versions of Python that are Python 2.2.3 and Python 2.1.3.

Here is a list of popular packages that are installed on the PythonCd. PythonCdRawPackageList has a complete raw list of installed Debian packages. The IDEs (Integrated Development Environments) that are installed are: eric3, IDLE, DrPython, and IPython. Additionally, there are GUI Builders like BoaConstructor, PythonCard, and WxGlade that can be used.

There are also several GUI Toolkit bindings available, such as PyGTK, PyQt, and WxPython. For graphics-related work, there are PIL, PyGame, and PyOpenGL libraries. PythonCD has several packages that are essential for web/HTML/XML development, like MoinMoin wiki software, TwistedMatrix (AKA Twisted), Quixote, and PyXML.

For scientific work, python-numeric and python-numarray (math extensions) are already installed with python-pyx (module for generating PostScript graphics, plotting). Database-related work can be done with Gadfly, python-mysqldb (interface for MySQL), python-pgsql (DB-API 2.0 interface to PostgreSQL), and python-pygresql (PostgreSQL module). The final package is PyChecker, which is a tool that checks your source code for common errors.
