QRQ is a free, open-source software that enables users to practice telegraphy messaging in Morse code on Linux and Unix OS.

If you're a Linux or Unix user in search of a reliable Morse telegraphy trainer, you should definitely take a closer look at qrq. This open-source software is similar to Rufz from DL4MM, but is designed specifically for mastering fast copying of callsigns, such as those needed for Contesting.

Please note that qrq is not intended for learning telegraphy per se. For that, you may want to check out radio.linux.org.au for CW learning software. But if you're looking to improve your copy speed and accuracy, then qrq might just be the tool you need.

Using qrq is quite straightforward. The program sends out 50 random calls from a database, one at a time, and waits for you to enter what you heard. After each attempt, qrq compares what you entered with the actual callsign. If you got it right, your speed increases by 10 CpM / 2 WpM, and you earn full points. If you made a mistake, however, your speed decreases by 10 CpM / 2 WpM, and you'll only earn partial points depending on how much of the callsign you got correct.

In addition to the ability to repeat a callsign as necessary, qrq also lets you set an initial speed range from 20 CpM (4 WpM) to infinity. You can adjust this speed and other settings via the configuration file qrqrc in the current directory or ~/.qrq/ . Alternatively, most settings can also be modified using the configuration menu (F5).

What truly sets qrq apart, however, is its carefully crafted CW tone generator. In order to avoid key clicks, the software shapes the CW signal form by amplitude-modulating it with a sine function. You can even set rise and fall times to any specific value in milliseconds.

New features for this release include the ability to display speeds in both WpM and CpM, as well as access to different CW waveforms including sine, sawtooth, and squarewave. Backspace should now work correctly in all terminals, and a new Perl script 'qrqscore' is available to synchronize your local toplist with the internet toplist. Finally, an ugly desktop icon has been added.

Overall, qrq is a solid option for those looking to improve their ability to copy callsigns at high speeds. While not designed for beginners in Morse code, the software is user-friendly and flexible enough to help users of all skill levels hone their abilities over time.
