QuickNES is a Nintendo emulator that shows a lot of promise. The emulation runs very smoothly, but there may be display issues with some Nintendo games. Unfortunately, users cannot choose the type of video display they prefer. QuickNES performs well on a 700 MHz G4 flat-panel iMac under Mac OSX with graphics set to thousands of colors, and on a 400 MHz PowerMac under Mac OS 9.
The standout feature of QuickNES is its flexible movie handling, which has been developed extensively, with more development planned for tool-assisted speedrun type uses. Additionally, users may adjust image and sound parameters with live feedback, and the emulator has a mild CPU usage, and allows users to let a movie play in the background while performing other tasks.
However, QuickNES has some limitations. Users must rely on keyboard-only controls, and there is no full-screen mode. Also, the emulator lacks the polish and refinement of similar products like Nestopia. Though the developer's main goal is experimentation and research, QuickNES does pass almost all of the rigorous test ROMs.
QuickNES supports games and demos in the iNES (.nes) file format, including those compressed with zip or GNU zip (.gz). The game play is always recorded into a movie, which can be easily played and re-recorded from any point, with named time markers for ease of use. QuickNES offers instant rewind for undoing mistakes, and slow-motion playback and recording. Television video artifacts are emulated, and sound emulation is crystal-clear and includes adjustable stereo enhancement. There are also per-game customizations like adjustable turbo and screen options that are remembered.
In this release, the developer fixed a previously discovered bug; if "Keep backup when saving movie" was turned off in preferences, when the user saved it would delete the movie file from disk and not even allow the user to Save As elsewhere. QuickNES is an under-development emulator core and does not yet have industrial strength support, but experimentation and research remain the primary goals. Once the source is cleaned up, it will be released under the LGPL, and the developer will happily assist others in adding similar features to their emulators.
