These are great analyzers for the electronics hobbyist, but the setup process can be time-consuming and they do not store configurations internally. ScopeSaver helps users view the current configuration, including signal names and assignments, and save them to an XML file on their Mac's hard drive for later use. The application communicates over an RS-232 serial port.
One of the author's tested analyzers is an HP1631D, which has 5 pods and two analog scope channels. However, the size of the configuration records stored is tailored to the connected scope. Therefore, ScopeSaver should work with all of the following units: HP1630A, HP1630D, HP1630G, HP1631A, and HP1631D.
To use ScopeSaver, users will need to have a serial-to-GPIB converter since the application uses a serial port while the logic analyzer has a GPIB port. One option is the National Instruments GPIB-232CV-A serial-to-GPIB converter. However, if the user's computer, like the author's Powerbook, does not have a serial port, they will also need a Keyspan USB-to-RS232 converter. When the converter is plugged into one of the Powerbook's USB ports, the device file /dev/cu.USA191b1P1.1 is created, which ScopeSaver can detect on startup. Therefore, users should make sure to plug in the Keyspan converter before starting the application.
