ShapeAnnotator is an innovative software that offers a user-friendly Graphical User Interface (GUI) to inspect, segment, and semantically annotate 3D surface meshes. With ShapeAnnotator, users are able to load a mesh and a domain of expertise formalized as an OWL ontology. In addition, they can launch several segmentation algorithms and identify crucial surface features which can be annotated through an instance of an ontology class. Users can save the set of instances into an OWL file easily.
ShapeAnnotator provides all the necessary tools to create and edit surface features with ease. Users can browse and seek the desired ontology class with a fully functional ontology browser to instantiate and annotate each surface feature. The software implements the latest technologies to represent the semantics of 3D shapes, and is one of the primary technological outputs produced by the EU-FP6 financed Network of Excellence AIM@SHAPE. It is written in C++ and uses the JMeshLib API to represent the polygon mesh internally.
Accepted input file formats are those handled by JMeshLib, including OFF, PLY, STL, VER-TRI (a proprietary format used at IMATI-GE / CNR). Partially accepted input formats are VRML 1.0, VRML 97, OBJ, and IV 2.1.
