Shredder Classic

I recently came across the Shredder chess programs by Stefan Meyer-Kahlen, and was amazed to learn that they have won twelve titles as World Computer Chess Champion. Not only that, but they are leading in all important computer chess rating lists and are widely accepted as the best chess programs for PCs.

What drew me to these programs in the first place was the combination of extremely powerful play with easy handling. I was pleased to discover that the play of the program can be variably adjusted to any strength, so that everyone can find an adequate chess partner. In addition, many functions for analyzing one's own games as well as a built-in coach, who is alert of one's mistakes, help to improve your play.

Some of the most important features of these programs include an improved chess engine that is approximately 100 Elo stronger than the predecessor, daily updated chess puzzles, and new extremely fast and compact chess endgame databases called Shredderbases. Other features include computer assisted game analysis, access to a huge online endgame database with over 800 GB of data, and the ability to play Chess960, also known as Fischer Random Chess.

One thing I really appreciate about these programs is the user interface, which is easy to handle and can be set up individually. There are six different sets of pieces and chessboards both in 2D and 3D, and the chess engine has extremely powerful play that can be individually adjusted and configured. My personal favorite feature is the voice output of the moves, which makes gameplay even more engaging.
